Physics Friction
People have an intuitive understanding of friction, a resistance to motion, that is fairly accurate. This is because we deal with the effects of friction on a daily basis: we slip on ice, lose our grip on wet objects, grease bike chains, use lip balm, and work up a sweat moving heavy furniture. This lessons introduces the mathematics of friction, specifically friction between two objects sliding against each other. The difference between static and moving (sliding) friction is discussed, and connections are made to forces and the motion of bodies under the influence of friction. A knowledge of vectors and the laws of motion is required.
